but dammit, just try to say
"the holocaust was forever ago, white people should get over it"
sometimes, you’re not the hero and dammit, white people, you’re just going to have to get over it.
slavery matters. the…
No offense but, that’s really rude of you to say. Like, yeah it was a tragedy no one is denying that. Okay, maybe some people do but not all white people are and pointing at all white people and saying they’re all thinking this way is just as bad as white people saying black people need to get over it. Not every person of every race thinks/feels/acts the same way and making assumptions like that over ANY race IS racist. Racism doesn’t happen to JUST black people, it happens to ALL people.
Honestly though complaining about the fact that we USED TO have slaves isn’t going to fix anything. The only thing we can really do is be nice to EVERYONE. Just because your great great great grandparents were slaves doesn’t make you any better than me. Just because my great great great grandparents owned slaves doesn’t make me any better than you. Honestly, what do you want me to do about the fact that they had slaves? If there was something I could do about it I would, but unfortunately I can’t, so people need to stop making white people feel like crap over something they have no control over. I was raised by the saying “Don’t antagonize over things you can’t change” and I think everyone should really think about that saying for a while. According to German history books the holocaust never happened, should we just write slavery out of our history books? Would that solve everything?
Equality for black people should not be a thing either, it should be equality for everyone. People like to say things like “Well I’m black so I should get more than you because you’re white and my family used to be slaves owned by your family.” No. That’s not equality. Equality is “Well your family used to own my family but it’s cool, we should have the same.”
And people need to stop saying only the black people were oppressed because they were slaves. Like, thousands upon thousands of races, religions, ethnicities, and genders have been and STILL ARE being oppressed/murdered/tortured/enslaved. It’s just that the only people that still bring it up are (usually) black people. I mean, you don’t walk around seeing Armenians yelling at Turkish people “You killed my ancestors so I should get this and this and this and this!”, like no that doesn’t happen.
And I just want to make clear that I’m not pointing any of this at you directly (honestly I think you’re a pretty cool person and I do really like you) I’m just saying in general to everyone in the world. I think we all just need to pull on our big kid pants, educate ourselves a bit, and move on to a different subject. How about instead of talking about slavery in the past we talk about the slavery that’s happening now? Or we can talk about this massive amount of snow we’re about to get? Or how Ellen freaking rocked the Oscars?
Excuse me, but nowhere up there did I say “all white people.” I made a statement in general by saying “white people” and going gently about it and saying “a few minority of the white population” is just not the way I wanted to do things, I’m sorry. I was/am angry and I’m not going to stop to softly articulate something that, truly, is something bigger than you might realize. It’s so incredibly obvious to me that all white people aren’t like that, and that is why I did not say “all white people.” But, I will tell you that you sound so ignorant to me right now. I am not calling you stupid or an idiot, just misinformed and uneducated about something that, really, doesn’t effect you on a daily basis.
You can NOT sit here and tell me that “Racism doesn’t happen to JUST black people, it happens to ALL people,” and expect me to just nod my head. Of course, everyone can be racist to everyone, that’s a straight fact, but I was discussing white and black in that post and so white and black racism is what was brought up front. Also, there is no way in hell a black person can be as racist to a white as a white can be to a black. It’s the damn truth. Until black people lead the country in highest pay and best jobs, until black people stop being called “thugs” and “trouble-makers” and “ghetto” and so much fucking more by white people who see nothing more than the color of our skin or the kinkiness of our hair, until we can stop being held guilty of our own murder in the courts, until so much fucking more is done, there is no way you can get me to believe that blacks can be more racist to whites. It’s just not true.
What are you talking about with the history books thing? Yeah, we can’t change history, but are you really implying that I would think I’m better than you because your people owned mine? Are you really implying that we should just stop talking about slavery merely because of the point I said above? Because it’s “in the past” and “nobody can change it anyway” so stop talking about it? Because, fucking shit, slavery is not over. It’s just institutionalized now. It’s in a different name, in a different system, in a different time, but still under the same fucking master. And, honey, ignoring the Holocaust doesn’t mean it never fucking existed. It’s just erasing an embarrassing part of history because the GERMANS weren’t the heroes in that part of their history. They were the villains, they see it now, and so they conveniently decide to leave it out of the books so that their children won’t see the monsters Hitler created. It’s hiding demons in the closet. They’re still there, just out of sight. And, once they leave Germany or, shit, do a quick Google search, those kids are gonna open that closet door wide open and see what the whole world already knows.
And what the fuck do you mean, “Equality for black people should not be a thing either, it should be equality for everyone,” and then go on to give an example of something some black person would say? NO, HELL NO, there is no fucking equality for black people in this country. There is no equality for ANYONE in this damn country unless your skin is light and your hair is straight and your face is pretty and you’re white. Don’t let anyone fool you and teach you bullshit. Black people are not held at the same standard of whites, we don’t get the “same” as whites, we don’t get jack shit the same as whites. Don’t tell me about equality when I get the privilege of staring inequality right in the fucking face every day.
Also, oh, I see. I’m so sorry. I see now that I “…need to stop saying only the black people were oppressed because they were slaves.” Because, obviously, other people are suffering so much more, right? I mean, we never suffered from the ACTUAL slavery, right? Just the institutionalized version, just the effects of it. I mean, there’s starving kids in Africa for pete’s sake! We should just weep for the state of the REST of the world and ignore the suffering taking place in our own damn country. Other people have been slaves, too, other people are slaves now, right? When they’re delivered from slavery, I guess you’ll want them to put that behind them, too, and want them to hold hands with their captors in their newfound state of “equality” that exists, even when it damn sure doesn’t seem equal to them. And I mean, why would the white folk bring up slavery? We’re all supposed to forget about it, right? But, you know, remember the Alamo, remember Pearl Harbor, remember the Holocaust, remember 9/11, remember everything else, but FUCK YOU if you wanna bring up the enslavement, torture, murder, and dehumanization of an entire race that just so happens to have happened to your fucking family. Because, now, now you’re just making people feel bad. ):
Honey, you need education. I am not going to move onto a “different subject” when you’re not even getting an A in this one. I know you’re not black, so you probably can’t relate to or understand 95% of the things I can, so I’m not going to pretend like you can. Speaking about the slavery my great-great-grandmother went through is not trivializing the plight of slaves today. This is not a competition of tragedy, this is a statement of truth. And, dammit, you need to learn it.
I do not hate you, I do not dislike you. This is not a personal attack against you but against whatever or whoever has ingrained these thoughts in you. Because, sweetie, they’re not right. They’re really not. And that angers me when people push that whole “Everyone is equal in America!” bullshit, because it is a LIE. It is the biggest lie to be told to a child. America is not equal. America is not free.
Okay, well this is a lot of information so I’m just going to go about this bit by bit. It seems as though you replied to my statements without fully reading, re-reading, internalizing, and considering what it was I was saying because you either didn’t understand what I was trying to say or you were just ignoring it and twisting my words on purpose.
First of all, with black and white racism, I honestly see black people treat white people WAYYYY worse than white people treat black people. Yes, I know what the media shows and yes they do hype up certain things more just because of race. But in the real day to day life, white people are as sweet as can be. I’ve had people yell in my face for no reason whatsoever at a McDonald’s just because the people in my college town are majority black and they don’t like the students because they see us all as pretentious white rich kids (which not all of us are). I did nothing to antagonize this woman but she attacked me with her words all because when the local public schools in this town were desegregated the white people threw a hissy fit and decided they weren’t going to work anymore. They decided to open up private schools that you have to apply for and only let the white people in. The public schools literally shut down (for 5 years) and when they finally reopened there were still HUGE segregation issues which lead to most white people moving from the town all together. This all happened in the mid 1960’s, and the private school still didn’t allow black students until 1986, which wasn’t that long ago. So yes it is relevant, I know that, but I don’t think it is a good excuse to point fingers and blame other people who literally had no control over the situation. And it certainly wasn’t any reason for this woman to come at me. I know this personal account might make me sound biased, but I’ve also seen it happen to plenty of my other friends, not only at my college but in my home town too where a black kid literally knocked a white kid out just because of the color of his skin (don’t tell the white kid was probably antagonizing him either because even the black kid admits he only hit him because he was white, AND his MOTHER backed him up on it). I have NEVER in my life personally seen a white person get violent with a black person just because of race. Obviously I’m not saying it doesn’t happen because I’m not an idiot, it does happen, but saying that black people are discriminated against more is such bull. And in case you haven’t heard, a black person does lead the country in the highest paid best job, his name is President Barack Obama and he’s been there since 2009.
I never said we should stop talking about slavery. If we stop talking about it ignore it that DOESN’T solve anything. That was my point there. I was saying that we should stop using it as an excuse. Just because you personally don’t think you’re better than white people because your ancestors were slaves does not mean everyone thinks that way. Again, I’m not trying to lump all black people together, I’m just saying that I have seen first hand where black people think they’re better than white people because their ancestors owned the black person’s ancestors. My point of the Holocaust thing was sarcasm. I was trying to say that people want to keep saying the world is unfair because of slavery in the past so how would you like people to fix it? If you or someone else can’t fix something then honestly what is the use of complaining about it or bringing it up? German saw a way to “fix” the Holocaust problem by writing it away, did that actually “fix” it? Hell no, so what would you propose the world do?
I also NEVER said there is equality for black people. Are black people currently equal to white people? Hell no. Should black people have more than white people just because they’re black? Hell no. Having more than someone who oppressed you in the past is not equality. Equality IS being equal. I mean, look at the word itself, EQUALity. What I was trying to say there though is that we shouldn’t be trying to make everything equal just between black and white when women still aren’t even equal to men in any race. If we want true equality we should be fighting for EVERYTHING to be equal between ALL groups of people. Why fight for just one group when there are plenty of others being oppressed? And in all honestly, if you want to break it down to just the white and black races then the current equality chain would be more like white men, black men, white women, black women. You can argue, but in the large scheme of things black men are more privileged than white woman. America is not an equal place, if we want to make it equal though we should not separate any races or genders at all; THAT was my major point there.
And when I was talking about how slavery is still a thing I honestly didn’t mean in other countries. Slavery still happens right here in the good ole USA. Most of the slaves now though are young Asian women, obviously there are slaves of every race and gender in America currently but I’m talking about the majority. And they’re delivered from slavery they should not put it behind them completely, they should seek ways to cope if need be, but they shouldn’t feel like they’re superior to people who just so happen to remind them of their captors. They shouldn’t feel entitled to more than anyone else has just because of their or their ancestors pasts. We should not forget slavery. No no no no no NEVER forget slavery, but just do everything in our power to ensure it NEVER happens again. And since you want to bring up all those other historical tragedies, let’s take Pearl Harbor for example. Using the logic you’re trying to argue, since the Japanese bombed us, we should hate all Japanese people. Okay. So since we dropped two atomic bombs on Japan, all Japanese people should hate us as well. Okay. Well see then with that logic the whole world should basically just all hate each other. We have found ways to move on from these moments and make peace with these people, things might still be rough from time to time but we don’t constantly throw it in their faces whenever we want to just to get what we want or something. I just don’t understand why the black and white race can’t do the same, there is more conflict between them than any of these other tragedies because people always feel like hashing it up and honestly that’s just childish.
Finally, no I’m not black, you got me there. I do, however, have black people in my family and none of them see things this way. None of them EVER think they’re better than white people just because of slavery, none of them EVER bring up slavery to win arguments, none of the EVER thing they’re entitled to more than a white person just because of skin color. Do they wish things were more equal? Sure, who doesn’t? But are they going to throw hissy fits about it? No, because that won’t solve anything either. They, like me, feel that equality should be between ALL people, not just their race.
Honestly though, just because my skin is light does not mean I’m white either. I don’t identify as white for my own personal reasons. My great great grandmother who (before people throw a fit and are all like “oh that’s stupid, that doesn’t count, you’re ignorant” because I’ve had people say that to me before) I DID in fact have the pleasure of meeting was 100% Cherokee Indian so I identify as that. And in case you were unaware, my family was slaves as well.
Basically my main point here is that you should not discriminate against all, or even most, white people just because of something that happened over a hundred years ago. The ones that still beat you down for it sure, you can dislike them all you want to but please don’t generalize and don’t think you’re better than anyone just because of the color of your skin (that goes for all colors and races, including black, white, Asian, Hispanic and everything in between). If you want to fight for equality that’s fine, I’m right there with you, but once there’s equality between white and black people are you just going to stop? Even though other races and genders are still getting put down all across the country, just because your race is equal now and it doesn’t concern you are you just going to sit there and continue to let that happen? Just because you see slavery as the biggest issue in history does that mean you should be equal before everyone else? I sure hope not because that’s just selfish, ignorant, and quite frankly rude. I really hope you can open your eyes in the future and and let other cultures into your world because there is sooo much you don’t seem to know or understand. And I sincerely hope, for your sake, my sake, and everyone else’s in this nation and the world, that one day America truly is equal and free to everyone. I honestly don’t see that happening in my lifetime, but I do hope for it to be someday.
